Jasper National Park – Hydrocarbon In-Situ Microbial Remediation

Low-impact, respectful remediation delivering meaningful savings within the Canadian Rockies

Project Details

Client: Pipeline Owner Province: Alberta Project Type: In-Situ Microbial Remediation of a Historical Crude Oil Release within a National Park Wetland

Project Overview

Low-impact remediation of a historical crude oil release within a sensitive wetland environment in Jasper National Park.

Scope / Challenge

Hydrocarbon impacts from a historical pipeline release extended across approximately 9,000 m² within a wetland adjacent to a river, requiring a remediation approach that minimized disturbance while meeting regulatory and stakeholder expectations.

Approach

Alta Tech developed a low-impact remediation strategy supported by detailed site investigation and stakeholder engagement.

Work included

  • Development of the conceptual site model using historical and field data
  • Coordination with Parks Canada and Indigenous stakeholders
  • Design and implementation of in-situ microbial treatment
  • Injection of targeted microbial strains using controlled delivery systemsOngoing monitoring to assess treatment performance

Outcome

Approximately 70% of the site has been remediated to applicable guidelines, with significant reductions in hydrocarbon concentrations. The selected approach minimized environmental disturbance and achieved an estimated cost savings of ~$6 million compared to conventional excavation.
